How do I get rid of cockroaches?

Here at Pest Patrol Termite and Pest Control in Abilene, we get calls daily from frantic homeowners who have a cockroach infestation in their home.

A cockroach infestation in your home should always be taken seriously.

Not only do cockroaches spread serious diseases such as poliomyelitis, dysentery, salmonella, etc. but they also give off allergens similar to cat dander which can trigger allergic reactions in some people, especially the elderly and children with respiratory conditions such as asthma.

Here in West Central Texas, we deal with several types of cockroaches in homes.  They are the German Cockroach and two types of cockroaches commonly known as “water bugs”.  They are Oriental Cockroach and the American Cockroach.

German Roaches are the smaller roach generally found on interiors.  Commonly called the kitchen roach or filth feeder.  These are common in households as well as commercial kitchens.  They are more attracted to warm/moist areas.

American Cockroaches and Oriental Cockroaches are generally found on exteriors, crawlspaces and cool/damp storage areas.

So… what can YOU the homeowner do to keep cockroaches out of your home?

Here are 6 ways to keep cockroaches from infesting your home:

  • Eliminate food and water sources
  • Eliminate harborage areas
  • Eliminate open food and dirty dishes
  • Eliminate pet food and water left out overnight
  • Make sure garbage cans and receptacles have tight fighting lids
  • Use caulking, weather stripping and screening to seal cracks and crevices where roaches can enter your home

To Prevent water bugs, moisture problems should also be addressed, especially in crawlspaces.  Proper ventilation is needed as well as moisture barriers in severe moisture problems.

Old plant debris and mulch should be removed from exterior foundations and from under shrub beds.  Exterior pet food and water provide nourishment for these types of roaches.

If left uncontrolled, cockroach populations, especially Germ cockroaches, can literally explode and, before you know it, can have hundreds, even thousands of cockroaches in your home.  And no one wants to deal with that!!
